Research Experience

July 2007 - July 2008

Dr. Kevin Camphausen, MD

Radiation Oncology Branch

National Cancer Institute

National Institutes of Health

Bethesda, MD

·      Wrote a clinical protocol to evaluate neuropsychological functioning and biomarkers in patients receiving whole brain radiation for brain metastases.

·    Studied the radiosensitizing effects of vorinostat (SAHA), a histone deacetylase inhibitor, in a breast cancer brain metastatic cell line (MDA-MB-231-BR) in vitro and in vivo

·     Investigated the potential role of c-Met and HGF as urinary biomarkers of disease progression in patients with glioblastoma multiforme

June 2005 - August 2005

Dr. Christopher Crane, MD

Dr. Prajnan Das, MD

Department of Radiation Oncology

MD Anderson Cancer Center

Houston, Texas

·      Retrospectively evaluated acute toxicity in 88 patients treated with capecitabine and concurrent radiation therapy to the upper abdomen.

·      Assisted in the collection of data in a quality of life study with patients treated with radiochemotherapy for anal cancer.

September 2003 – September 2004

Dr. Richard Salvi, Ph.D.

Center for Hearing and Deafness

University at Buffalo

·      Investigated the dose response of hearing loss in the chinchilla caused by the co-administration of ethacrynic acid and cisplatin.  Measured distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) of chinchillas, before and after cisplatin and ethacrynic acid treatment.   Assisted in cochlea harvesting, histology analysis of outer and inner hair cells and statistical data analysis.

·      Investigated gene expression of salicylate induced tinnitus in the rat. Injected rats with various doses of sodium salicylate, harvested brain tissues and cochleas and examined gene expression of Arg3.1/ARC, Homer-1 and NR-2A genes by employing RT-PCR techniques.

June 2003 - August 2003

Dr. Minoti Sharma, Ph.D.

Department of Molecular and Cellular Biophysics

Roswell Park Cancer Institute

Buffalo, NY

·      Selected to participate in the Roswell Park Cancer Institute Summer Research Program summer 2003.

·      Fellowship funded by the National Cancer Institute.

·      Studied the molecular mechanisms involved in DNA damage caused by anti-breast cancer agent tamoxifen and the role of antioxidants to prevent such damages in exposed cells.

·      Utilized High Performance Liquid Chromatography techniques to separate tamoxifen metabolites.

September 2001 – May 2002
Dr. Larry Hawk, Ph.D.

Psycho-Physiology Lab

Department of Psychology

University at Buffalo

·      Collected physiological data of participants in a study of voluntary emotional regulation of disgust among individuals with high and low disgust sensitivity.

·      Measured surface facial EMG of left zygomatic and levator, heart rate and skin conductance response.
