Saint Louis
1214-1270
Louis IX was the King of France between 1226 to 1270. Although he enacted legislation against Jews and expanded the scope of the inquisition to France, he was known for his kindness toward the poor, the ill, and the disabled. He fed beggars and the poor and ministered to lepers. He founded many hospitals and provided houses for reformed for prostitutes. In 1254, he created the world's first refuge for the blind in Quinze Vingts (Fifteen Score) in France, named after the 300 blind people that it housed. Built Sainte Chapelle
Louis is the only French king to be sainted.
