Research Profile

Our laboratory is currently investigating the mechanisms by which various inflammatory and immune molecules and their respective receptors activate and regulate the immune response to various pathogenic microorganisms. In particular, we are investigating various genetic polymorphisms in the genes which encode for these molecules, and how these polymorphism may affect their normal functions and/or are associated with susceptibility to disease. Molecules under study include various inflammatory cytokines and their receptors as well as fibrinogen and other acute phase proteins. Our laboratory is also studying the function of neutrophils, which are primary phagocytic cells that play a key role in host defense against extracellular bacteria, as well as participate in the acute phase of inflammatory reactions. Funding for research is provided by grants from the National Institute of Health.
